The whole is NOT greater than the sum of the parts.,
This review is from: Mylo Xyloto (Audio CD)Short and sweet: this is a good album with some average (by Coldplay standards) to excellent songs.
The album is, however, unfortunately ruined to a degree by over-production which too often serves to drown out the tasty (if not so subtle) melodies and vocals underneath. It's the musical equivalent of a delicious and painstakingly-crafted Xmas lunch drowning in a sea of rich gravy. It's all too thick and lumpy and there's far too much of it.
Not only that, but it's ruined further because the courses are served too soon after one another. There is no time to savour and reflect on what has gone before and adjust one's belt before we are pummelled with the next one. The end result is we are left feeling stuffed whilst at the same time feeling a tad unsatisfied, wondering what might have been had a different chef been tasked with preparing the same menu.
It's a 3 out of 5 from me as an album experience with the songs averaging 4 out of 5 in their own right.
The individual courses are definitely more satisfying than the feast as a whole.
