Dudley Pope's writing style gives a lot of pleasure to his readers.
Great descriptive narrative coming from a mind with a vast knowledge of many subjects, all authors covering this period of naval warfare throw an awful lot of cannon balls about, unlike most who settle for describing them by weight alone Pope takes the time to relate the various weights to everyday objects which makes it far easier for the reader to picture just what is hurtling towards a ship under fire.
The description of actually being inside a hurricane was a truly gripping page turner, even if it did occur too early in the book for it to be a totally fatal event.
His sub plots entertain and intrigue, in this book our hero spends the time shipwrecked on a small island by going on a treasure hunt. and by making Ramage more the Governor than a Captain allowed Pope to increase the humour shared between the characters.
I enjoy Pope's novels immensely and am very glad there are still plenty left in this series to enjoy, the one downside of this, (as with every series of novels) is every time Ramage has a pistol to his head and the finger is tensing on the trigger, I think ummm! another dozen books to go yet! so probably Ramage is not in quite such a mess as Pope would have me believe.
