Like a lot of reviewers I found the first book very slow, but stayed with it as Tad Williams has form. I am glad I did, I enjoyed the books. In typical Williams fashion it was not totally predictable. The sections beyond the shadowline were excellent and reminded me of the Otherland books. ( I know I am in a minority but I really rated) I liked the slightly surreal atmosphere. Shadowheart was a more conventional fantasy novel at the end, and as such a little disappointing. Lots of unanswered questions, (though I read it so fast I my have missed bits. Flint was never really accounted for, needed more development I think. Why Skurn helped Barrick so much was always a mystery. The disposal of the God was a little flat. Lots of questions! However its a book/series that will get better with each re read as you gradually understand the plot/ motivations.
I liked Briony - irritating as she was, she did feel real, not a conventional fantasy heroine!
