Wilfred Owen by Guy Cuthbertson,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Wilfred Owen (Hardcover)
In the first 20 pages or so the author makes several errors of fact and wild generalisations suggesting poor research. For example, comparing Owen with John Lennon - ? - he says: "Owen had [open spaces] and John Lennon had Strawberry Fields (implying comparable freedom to roam). Strawberry Fields was a Salvation Army children's home, used ironically in the Beatles' song. He repeats the myth that John Ruskin did not consummate his marriage to Effie becauser of his discovery that she had pubic hair - this is not correct, as is made clear in Suzanne Fagence Cooper's excellent biography of Effie. He claims that F.E.Smith's ennoblement to Lord Birkenhead was due to the increasing prosperity and significance of Birkenhead, which is piffle at the very least and suggests that once again Cuthbertson is being authoritative on subjects whereof he knows nothing. After this I decided that I probably wouldn't be able to believe a word he said about anything and gave the book to charity.
