This review is from: Sullivan: The Contrabandista & The Foresters (Audio CD)
The Contradabandista is hardly Sullivan at his best, hampered as he is by Burnand's clumsy libretto. The performances are perfectly adequate but the big stumbling block is The Foresters, possibly the dullest piece by Sullivan I have ever heard. Why was this leaden work included instead of some of the extra numbers created for the Sullivan / Burnand revision of Contrabandista as The Chieftain, numbers of which Jacobs in his Sullivan biography speaks very favourably?
