Amazing, absorbing and entertaining,
This review is from: The Lies of Locke Lamora: Book One of the Gentleman Bastard Sequence (GollanczF.) (Paperback)
Not since Philip Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy have I been so utterly lost in a book as I was with Locke Lamora. It's beautiful stuff- utterly gripping and unbelievably a debut novel (also, the first in a planned series of seven featuring Locke and his cohorts.)
There's not a duff character in the entire book, and while there are moments of violence and gore, it is so poetically laid out that you are able to envision the scene without feeling revulsion. These dramatic interludes add to the tale, not detract from it.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough- suitable for adults and older children (teenage years, I think the language is a little strong in places for it to be read by the Potter generation...)
