This review is from: Jane Eyre [DVD] (DVD)
I find myself in good company reading through reviews of other versions of this work, in that Jane Eyre changed my life. I read the book as a bored 12-year old piano student and it blew me away in the best sense! Inspired and ripe for a creative outlet, I was transformed within a few months into a respectible artist. I went on to study music in college and still play a bit.
I live and work in Los Angeles and just happened to find myself in Paisley, Scotland, all alone, on Sunday night (8 October), on a 9-day holiday in the UK. I was lucky enough to see the fantastic Episode 3! Ruth Wilson was different and remarkable. A completely true and original Jane Eyre - I can't praise her performance enough. Toby Stephens was also a revelation as Rochester. I have sinced reread sections of the book and find myself convinced by his complex portrayal of a man who "once had tender feelings" but who was deeply damaged and desperately grasping for redemption, and also surprised by the depth of his love for Jane. Well, I used to have tender feelings too and almost extended my stay another week to see the last episode. Happily, we have Masterpiece Theater here in the U.S. and I eventually saw the entire program. I recommend the UK (BBC-Region 2) DVD set for this production of Jane Eyre for the interesting interviews and other extras that were not included on the WGBH (US-Region 1) version of this DVD set.
My best wishes all!
