A fantastic book, something new on the subject of Van Morrison,
This review is from: Hymns to the Silence: Inside the Words and Music of Van Morrison (Paperback)
This is a really quite marvellous book, which does for Van Morrison what Michael Gray did for Bob Dylan - giving due, careful and detailed attention to Morrison as a creative artist. It is by far the best book I've read on Morrison, and really raises the bar for writing about him. It is sometimes quite academic and requires a bit of effort on the part of the reader to keep up but the very wide knowledge Mills has of the music of Morrison, and the connections he makes from that to jazz, blues, folk country and so on, makes for a very illuminating volume. Plus where else are you going to read about 'You Got the Power', an obscure song I really love which Mills writes about in here! If you are at all interested in Van Morrison's music, this is an eye-opening must-read.
