3.0 out of 5 stars Some great rock icons from way back, 13 Jan. 2004
This review is from: Rock Icons: Guitar Gods [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
Be warned – these are old film clips, some in colour some in black & white, according to the back label from the archives of the legendary Beat Club in Hamburg. The sound isn’t to god either, though supposedly in 5.1 Surround. So why the 3 stars? Well first, it does feature an impressive line-up of the guitar greats from the late 60s / early 70s; Carlos Santana, Jerry Garcia, Jeff beck, Alvin Lee, Johnny Winter, Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, Jimi Hendrix and Leslie West, and secondly, while the performances are not really concert performances, but rather early days ‘psychedelic rock videos’ some of the performances are still really fascinating. You get to see the original Santana line-up with Michael Shrieve on drums performing Jingo. There’s a very self confident Alvin Lee doing Good morning little school girl, with dancing go-go schoolgirl and all, a young B.B. King, a rare concert footage of Johnny Winter as the rock icon of Johnny Winter And Live-fame (check out this LP/CD if you don’t already have it!) before he went back to his blues roots, one of the earliest film clips of Jimi Hendrix, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell performing Hey Joe, a real gem, Eric Clapton performing with Delaney & Bonnie who’s band were later to form the basis for his own Derek & The Dominoes, a young edition of the Who performing Happy Jack (filmed in black & white as are all the 60s performances presented here) and last but not least a driving version of Don’t Look Back performed by Leslie West’s power-trio Mountain here augmented by keyboardist Steve Knight. Filmed in psychedelic colours of the time – with Corky Laing beating the hell out of the drums, Cream’s legendary producer, Felix Pappalardi, hammering on the bass and guitar wizard Leslie West with his mountainous body playing some fierce guitar and spitting out the words … Don’t look around … as it was a matter of life and death, which it probably was. So while not the best DVD you might have, still one that you’ll be happy to have in your collection and one you will return to from time to time, maybe just to check out that it is still there … ‘cause memories are made of this.
The track listing of the DVD is as follows:
Santana – Jingo
Grateful Dead – One more Saturday night
Ten Years After – Good morning little schoolgirl
Johnny Winter – Johnny B. Goode
James Gang w/Joe Walsh – Walk away
B.B. King – Heartbreaker
Duane Eddy – Peter Gunn
Jimi Hendrix – Hey Joe
Delaney & Bonnie w/Eric Clapton – Tribute to Robert Johnson
Mountain – Don’t look around
The Who – Happy Jack
