This review is from: The Roots of Modern Jazz: the 1948 Sensation Sessions (Audio CD)
The bebop flavoured jazz on this little-known CD was recorded in Detroit over 60 years ago by SENSATION records who specialised in blues and R&B. It consists of 26 short tracks(all less than 3 minutes) with fine performances from Milt Jackson(vibes), Sir Charles Thompson(piano), Russell Jacquet(trumpet), Leo Parker(baritone sax) and especially "Lord Nelson" aka Sonny Stitt(alto sax).
According to the CD notes "the sound quality on this release has been greatly improved over previous issues of the material".
All in all, the 5 sessions on this enjoyable album give a fascinating snapshot of the state of 'modern jazz' in 1948 and deserve a place in any jazz collection.
