A Fantastic Read!,
This review is from: Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage to the Antarctic (Hardcover)
Lansing does a stunning job of describing the unimaginable hellish difficulties experienced by Shackelton and his crew in their Polar exploits. What comes across time and again is the sheer scale and depth of the suffering they endured.
This is a wonderfully evocative book. In his description of its capture and eventual destruction by the closing ice, 'Lansing' almost brings the `Endurance' to life. The reader can almost hear and feel the pain of 'Endurance' as it is crushed, groaning under the growing weight and pressure of the ice - the men's hopes being crushed along with it. In turn, we are painful witness to its slow, agonising death - and eventual abandonment.
A thrilling book, where the author really transports us to the polar wastes with Shackelton and his crew. A REAL adventure story, with timeless values.
