This is THE definitive album of psychedelic rock music!,
This review is from: The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (Audio CD)
I was soooo happy when I purchased this. I often write in these Amazon reviews complaining that I've bought an album which is less surreal and psychedelic than it's cover artwork suggests. Well, 'Piper At The Gates Of Dawn' remains to date the only album I've encountered which is MORE psychedelic than the cover artwork suggests. I too, used to think 'Sgt. Peppers' was the one, not after I heard this. I think it's one of very few albums which is pure bizarre, freakish fairy tale comsic rock music from start to finish and I think that's a massive ahievement for a debut album of ANY band, let alone Floyd. There was nothing else like it back in 1967 and there's nothing like it now.
I think the songs individually, aren't necessarily legendary, but the collective creativity and atmosphere of this album is mind blowing and the fact that the band's lead singer/songwriter/guitarist Syd Barrett, was seriously genuinely drifting in and out of any sense of reality does represent the sheer innovation of this album.
There is a list on this site one customer has made, with 25 top recommended UK psychedelic rock albums. I have several others on the list ('Piper' is no.1 on the list, no surprise!) including 'Tomorrow' by a band of the same name, Jefferson Airplane's 'Surrealistic Pillow' and 'The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown' but for me, 'Piper' is just far superior to all of these albums in terms of originality and none of them even nearly take me into the same depth of audible pixie-land as 'Piper' does. It's just like, an epic 41 minutes and 59 seconds fantasy adventure dude!!!
Any bad points? Yes, there is one. After listening to this album I had found my new yard stick against which all other LPs of an even remotely strange nature would be measured. This album almost killed off any appreciation I had for 'Sgt. Peppers'!!!!!!!
Anyway, enough of my raving, this is but one perspective of many, but if even if you only listen to buy one psychedelic album in your life, this is the one to consider the most.
