4.0 out of 5 stars Simple but effective chiller, 4 April 2013

This review is from: Deviation [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
An escaped prisoner kidnaps a young woman for absolutely no reason whilst trying to leave the country. The woman tries to escape. That about sums up the plot. It's not complicated or clever, but it does make for compelling viewing.

Danny Dyer shows himself to be a very capable actor in this film, shattering the typecast of cockerny hardman that he is normally associated with. His character of Frankie is brutally violent, chillingly unhinged, and I found him genuinely disturbing. Dyer can indeed act, and I defy anyone to say otherwise after watching this. Hopefully in future he'll diversify a bit more and taken on more challenging roles like this.

The downside for me was the victim of the piece - Amber, a capable and respectable young nurse, who despite being apparently smart, lacks some basic common sense. She was very frustrating to watch.

Overall, a gripping thriller. Ignore the blurb on the disc because it's misleading. This is a solid, two-person psychological drama, with a lot of dialog and a few action scenes. It is not a "thrill ride" by any means.

Worth noting: The blu-ray has no subtitles.

Also worth noting: This film is not for the sensitive viewer; it contains very disturbing scenes!
