An underated gem of an album.,
This review is from: Touched By Jesus (Audio CD)
Touched By Jesus is a transitional album that sees the band moving away from the more folky/gothic style in evidence on their previous releases to a more straight ahead rock feel.
New guitarist Marty Willson-Piper brings a more textured and raw feel to a lot of the guitar work, painting big emotional walls of sound on some of the tracks and tight controlled jangling, almost psychedelic parts on others. Andy Cousins bass remains the solid basis for many of the tracks moving from simple supportive work driving the tracks forward to melodic counterpoint. Mark Price's work on the drums is solid and energetic but never intrusive. Julianne Regan's vocals are the centre piece. Her voice is clear, ethereal and gorgeous in it's purity, it's a unique and distinctive sound without affectation.
The songs are strong and the lyrics deeper than the average chart pop song. Highlights are Wishing The Hours Away and Are You Lonely on which all the pieces drop perfectly into place, combining to produce a sum greater than their parts.
Touched By Jesus is a great but often overlooked album. If you can find a copy I recommend it without reservation.
