One of the finest adventure novels ever written,
This review is from: A Twist of Sand (Paperback)
High adventure in the true sense of the word. In the mid 20th century three or four novelists had this genre down to perfection: Alastair McLean, Hammond Innes, and Geoffrey Jenkins. All three were masters of their craft: literate and well-constructed prose, unbearably exciting plots and a recognition of their readers' intelligence.
A Twist of Sand is Jenkins' first, and in my mind his best (A Grue of Ice comes very, very close). It grabs the reader from the outset and never lets go - but using tight, literate prose that never descends to condescension. The story itself is very plausible: set off the coast of what is now Namibia and the southern reaches of Angola, it is a wartime tale of the search for oil by the Nazis and the desperate attempts to prevent them.
Well worth the high price Amazon is charging at the moment.
