Amazon Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Play TV (PS3) (Accessory)The unit arrived from Amazon quite quickly. Play TV set-up is very straight forward. SCEE even provide a DVD to guide you through installation (but in all honesty you don't need it).
Once up and running you get a `Play TV' icon on your PS3 menu system. Once Play TV is selected you get another rotating menu system that allows you to control everything from selecting TV to choosing a channel (EPG) right through to managing recordings. I love SCEE menus and find them quite intuitive. The EPG is very good but not excellent like Sky.
Once Play TV is running there are a number of informative icons that make navigation with the BD remote a breeze. SCEE even provide a TV cover for the BD remote (not that you really need it). In all honesty you only use a few buttons on a BD remote and mainly the big round one. My only gripe about the BD remote though is the size of the channel buttons (way too small).
I have a 1080i TV with built in Freeview. I decided to buy the Play TV and plug in the aerial (thereby losing the Freeview on my TV and relying on the PS3 for Freeview). I have to say I am disappointed with the picture quality of the PS3 Freeview. The picture quality is a lot worse than the built in Freeview. I can't understand why. The only way to describe it is like comparing High Definition with Standard Definition. I feel short changed! The picture is really grainy and the wife has insisted we revert back to built in Freeview TV until I come up with a solution to make the picture better. I've tried everything available in PS3 menus. No luck.
Good points: There are some(!) notably the speed of the EPG and selecting the red button (top right of Freeview screens) is instant. I like the fact that when a channel is selected you get a brief description about the programme and it is very easy to record. You can pause TV, rewind (if you have the option on to start with). All in all quite good.
Bad points: Firmware updates. Play TV tells you that there is an update - but finding it is not intuitive enough (why can't it be automatic like normal PS3 updates). To find it select > settings > about (it's in there near the bottom).
My first recording (Charlie and Lola) did not work. There was a time overlap apparently (error recording). This is something Sky does well and compensates earlier time starts, or if a programme goes on longer. There is a way round it (a pain) and with Play TV on you have to edit start and end times (which kind of defeats the object in the first place and uses valuable disc space). Recordings take up a lot of space so if you have a lot of game saves (MGS, COD, Home) do not expect many recordings. I am using Play TV as a dedicated Freeview box. It is a real bind (in the mornings!) turning the PS3 on.. waiting for the PS3 to load up... locate Play TV... select Play TV.... Wait.... select TV when Play TV is running... all a bit of a chore (wife hates this as well). Why can't my BD remote have a big button on it that does all this for me! Last up there is no series link so if you wanted to record a week's worth of Eastenders - to do this you have to go into each day and do it manually (and adjust times just in case).

Ms. M. E. Mccorquodale says:
CAN I ASK WHAT SORT OF CHANNELS ARE AVAILABLE WITH THIS SYSTEM? FOR EXAMPLE MY FREEVIEW BOX GIVES ME DAVE VIRGIN, AND ALL THE FOUR CHANNELS (E4 FILM 4 MORE 4) HOWEVER MY BOYFRIENDS FREEVIEW DOESNT PROVIDE HIM WITH SOME OF THE BASIC FREEVIEW CHANNELS CONSIDERING GETTIN HIM THIS FOR XMAS.
