I Love This Book!,
This review is from: The Baby's Catalogue (Picture Puffin) (Paperback)
The story goes that the Ahlbergs wrote this after despairing that their daughter was only interested in reading the Mothercare catalogue.
The book follows the same babies, of different ages, through a variety of ordinary everyday activities. Despite the illustrations being a little dated, there are plenty of familiar objects to point at. All of my children's favourie things are there - beakers, ducks, bananas, dogs, sausages. My eldest son is particularly thrilled that there is a family with ginger hair like his brother's!
Janet Ahlberg's illustrations, as always, manage show a diverse selection of families and situations without being so worthy as to be nauseating. For example the book shows both men and women caring for babies, and both bottle feeding and breastfeeding.
I would say this book is ideal from about 18 to 30 months. Both my children have loved this book and it is one of the few books that hasn't caused me to hide it in a fit of Reading Fatigue.
