This review is from: Doctor Who - Horror of Fang Rock [DVD] (DVD)
I remember 'Horror of Fang Rock' fondly from my childhood. That having been said, it cannot be denied that when Graham Williams took over as producer from Phillip Hinchcliffe there was a marked drop in overall quality of the show. However under him there was still the occasional good story like 'Image of the Fendahl' for example, and for me anyway a couple of really standout ones which were: 'Horror of Fang Rock' and 'City of Death'.
The mysterious thick fog and eerie darkness are very atmospheric and effective and the lighthouse is well realised (the whole set including the rocks surrounding the lighthouse were all filmed in the studio). The characters are very hammy as was the norm for these period costume drama episodes, but this can be forgiven as the oneliners and overall script here is so witty that you can't help but be charmed, and this includes some great lines from the Doctor and Leela. There's even a moment when the actress who plays the female lead role can barely keep a straight face, but again this just adds to the overall charm.
This little gem of a four-parter consists of atmosphere, suspense, claustrophobia and horror. Highly recommended.
