I've played Football Manager pretty much since I could read and absolutely loved every minute of it. I've never felt the need to write a review before because its always been so good. But this year's is frankly awful.
The match engine has been completely overhauled, so much so that nothing works right. Goalkeepers make errors that you'd see once a season on a regular basis, there's no effort from any of your players to make tackles or interceptions and some of the passing is a joke. They've seemingly tried to make it more about tactics this year, but there isn't enough tactical changes you can make to create a game that's tactics-orientated. In past years assembling a strong team was usually enough and although this has been critiqued, in real life you often find the teams with the best players do the best. Its football.
I've been playing it for months and still haven't cracked it. Another aspect which is so much worse than previous editions is the sudden switch between good runs of form and bad ones. According to this years game, its perfectly plausible to win eleven on the trot, lose at home to bottom of the league and then lose your next ten. On one of my saves, my Stalybridge team won ten out of eleven games to mathematically secure the playoffs. We then lost the remaining four games and both playoff legs...without even scoring a goal.
Its so challenging and unplayable. All the fun has been taken out of what has been an absolutely outstanding series. If you're going to play it, don't dare try play 4-4-2, the players seem baffled by it. Any 4-5-1 formation seems to work better.
