An historic slice of Americana before the British invasion.,
This review is from: The Golden Age of American Rock 'n' Roll Vol.1: Hard-to-Get Hot 100 Hits from 1954-1963 (Audio CD)
If, like me, you thought you had an almost comprehensive collection of American music from the late 50's and early 60's, you may need to think again. This is the first of a series of nine collections by the admirable ACE team. Each one packed with 30 American hits from 1954 to 1963.
Highlights on this album include 'Denise' by Randy and the Rainbows (later to become 'Denis' by Blondie), the definitive doo-wop of the Penguins ('Earth Angel'), the first example of phasing ('The Big Hurt'), early Spector productions ('Pretty Little Angel Eyes' and 'I Love How You Love Me') and gems like 'Sixteen Candles','Sally Go Round The Roses', 'Tossin' and Turnin''and 'Since I Don't Have You'. I could go on, but if you like American originals of songs that were frequently covered or tracks that simply weren't aired at the time, this is for you.
The sleeve notes are the best I've seen and reflect the genuine interest of the team who put the collection together.
I've bought all nine!
