This is fantastic. With the long running time, I decided to watch it this morning, and I was just completely blown away. It is a far better opening movie than The Fellowship of the Ring. It starts off with Bilbo (as seen in FOTR) working on the book, and this scene takes place on the day of the 111th birthday party. The movie then tells the brief history of the dwarves of Erebor before Samug's arrival. It slows down a little bit in the shire, where the now young Bilbo encounters Gandalf for the first time, and the dwarves arrive at Bag End. It's just an extended scene, and a bit boring to be honest. It soon speeds up again as the Hobbit joins the dwarves and the wizard on their quest. There are Orcs, Goblins, and Trolls, the wolf like Wargs. The movie introduces Gollum, Galadriel, Elrond and Saruman, as well as a 3rd wizard (Radagast the Brown). The witch king also puts in a brief appearance. There is just so much action, including things I can't recall from the novel, especially the Thunder Battle between Rock Giants. The music and scenery is beautiful and the story engrossing. Trouble is, with such a strong opening, are they going to be able to keep up the pace. Bring on the sequels!

Sounds great. Am looking forward to my dvd being delivered. Supposed to have been today, but as I ordered it in February suppose it's too much to expect it on release day. Even if I was told by taking first class postage on the dvd it would get here today. Still so glad you enjoyed the film. Made me even more envious and madder, mine has not been delivered.
