This review is from: The Great Ships - Rulers of the Waves [DVD] (DVD)
This second series of The Great Ships is 13 episodes long, though if you own the first series you only get 12 episodes,as the first episode,Destroyers,is lifted in its entirety from the first series. As with all series of this kind, its already rolled out its big guns,so this time out were left with lesser well known types of ships to take center stage.Including Ocean Liners,Windjammers,Schooners and Viking Ships. Its the same format as before, their development and evolution, and in some cases what brought about their demise. As you would expect some episodes work better than others,I found the ones on the Viking Ships and Windjammers fascinating, the ones on the Coast Guard ships and the Amphibious Assault ships less so.
Each episode is solidily made, and packed full of plenty of facts and figures, not to mention interesting trivia, such as the origins of the saying "A Square Meal".For what it costs this box set does offer up plenty of viewing, just shy of ten hours, and is worth the money. As in the first series there is the ever present, patriotic flag waving, which does become a little irratating on a couple of episodes, but it doesnt get in the way too often. If anything I enjoyed this second series slightly more than the first, thanks to the diversity of the ships featured, which arent all military.
