This review is from: Extractions (Audio CD)
This CD collects Dif Juz's only full-length studio album, 1985's `Extractions', along with two tracks each from their 1981 EPs `Vibrating Air' and `Huremics'. This band was certainly one of the more obscure on 4AD's roster which I suppose is demonstrated by the fact that all of their material is long out of print. I have always enjoyed 4AD's material and only bought this CD second hand recently out of curiosity.
The more recent material is presented first and its dreamlike textures and chiming, echoing guitars are unmistakably 4AD; it is no surprise to see that Robin Guthrie is the producer for all of the tracks on the `Extractions' LP. Liz Fraser is guest vocalist on `Love Insane' but otherwise all of the tracks here are instrumentals. The band's name is a contraction of `Different Jazz' and this gives a clue as to what makes Dif Juz different. The music has a loosely structured, almost free-form quality with superb saxophone playing winding through on many tracks. The band were also influenced by dub and this is shown by the prominent bass and lively rhythms
This CD is evocative and quite addictive but to be critical I would have to say that it is generally short of immediate melody and does require some listens to fully enjoy. I like it a lot though and would recommend it to curious 4AD fans.
