This review is from: Crochet Bouquet: Easy Designs for Dozens of Flowers (Paperback)
This is a lovely book in so far as it is chock full of many different types of delightful crochet flowers that leap off the page and make you want to pick up a crochet hook and create them immediately! The author clearly has a passion for both crochet and flowers and it is great as a browse through and get inspired type of book.
However, a major flaw becomes evident as soon as you sit down and actually want to set about making any of these items. First off, the book is written all in American crochet terminolgy. This in itself is an annoyance but I usually just ignore the written instructions and follow the pattern charts when creating crocheted pieces so the terminolgy used in the descriptions is of little consquence as the symbols on the pattern charts are universal and can be followed regardless of whether it is a UK or US publication.
But unfortunately therein lies the problem with this book: THERE ARE NO PATTERN CHARTS!
How something as obvious as pattern charts could have been omitted in a book on crochet I cannot understand. For anyone who is used to crocheting, once you have learned the universal symbols for the various stitches in crochet, it means that you can basically then pick up any crochet book (UK or American)and get to work straight away at a glance by just interpreting the pattern charts regardless of what "language" the terminolgy is actually written in.
Unfortunately in this book, each and every flower "how to" only has long written out instructions e.g. "Round 1: ch 8, sc in next two stitches, hdc, sc etc" (already I am thinking "okay so in UK terms that means chain 8, then single crochet, oh wait no that means double crochet in UK stitches, then, hdc? ah, half double crochet, oh wait no that means half TREBLE crochet in UK terms..." etc etc and this repeats for EVERY round!! Very confusing and NOT a quick OR easy way to create these supposedly quick and easy flowers!!!!
The inclusion of the universal symbol charts for each one (which need not have taken up more than a quarter of a page for each) would have completely avoided this stumbling block and made this a 5 star, brilliant and easy to follow book. But a complete absence of any charts means it is merely a 3 star book - looks pretty and lots of lovely ideas in it, but just not practical to use on a regular basis. Overall, very disappointed.
