1.0 out of 5 stars Shameful, greedy, unreasonable price., 15 Aug. 2014
By
This review is from: Kill la Kill - Part 1 of 3 Collector's [DVD] (DVD)
Absolutely shocking price for only the first third of the series. And this is an anime I'd be absolutely willing to spend more money than I usually or ever do on boxsets. Completely absurd and unreasonable, wont be buying for now.

Hi Telaka,

Firstly I'm sorry to see you're reviewing a product that hasn't actually been released yet - I actually do check out our products on Amazon pretty regularly so I do see when new comments are brought up. We're always happy to discuss product models and this is one we've been covering a whole lot on Facebook really because we do understand people's concerns and it's always sad for us to see negative reviews for things we're pouring our heart and soul into producing.

Accusing us of being greedy stings a bit too as if we could do a cheaper DVD set right now we would! At the moment though for the DVD - to give context (at today's currency rates):

In Japan - the DVD edition is split over 9 parts and each part costs in regular packaging at £28.09 SRP = £252.81 for it all.
In the USA - the DVD edition is split over 5 parts and again standard amaray box at £23.95 SRP = £119.75
In the UK - the DVD edition is split over 3 parts, with deluxe packaging at £49.99 SRP == £149.99

It's a tough down the middle split but we felt that a slightly higher cost but more value for money in terms of packaging + extras represented more value for money in the short term until either half season sets or a whole season set was viable in later 2015 as it's easier to price half sets at a reachable price-point. We realise there is a desire for a comfortably priced Amaray DVD set - and I guess we could have just not done a DVD release until we could do them in half season sets - but then we'd receive flack for doing nothing for DVD buyers too!

That said, the way we're producing the DVD sets means we can do a lower number for now vs Blu-Ray without it costing more for the packaging so it's kind of a half-way house all in all. We also have to answer to the licensor and sadly as our DVD region code matches Japan there's a lot more stringent rules and less negotiation space than Blu-Ray overall alas (as BD is on a different region code).

Retailer set their own discounts and we'd expected more of a discount than this so maybe over time it will decrease - in fact a quick Google revealed to me that there are already some retailers discounting DVD so may be worth checking our Facebook for the best deals (we tend to share them).

Don't worry though - I'm not here to try and change your mind into purchasing this edition - but I just wanted to make you aware that we do take negative comments seriously and to give a bit of context.

In the meantime too the show is also available on Netflix and Wakanim while waiting for a cheaper edition as well. It's not ideal but it means you can show your support for a show you clearly love legitimately still :).

You never know though - we may still be able to negotiate something cheaper sooner but it's a really tough arguement - so leave it with us and we'll see what we can do!

Hope this at least makes things clearer and helps debunk the first two parts of the title of this review anyway and apologies for the essay!

You could just wait until the standard set comes out, instead of throwing your toys out the pram, Aniplex are unfair with their prices and this is a decent comprise. At the very least you could complain to the publisher, this is not a complaints section it is a review.

Can I say here:

I like to see Anime Limited's explanation of pricing. I don't think it's fair to label them as greedy when they deal in a market that is a notoriously tough sell.

But... at a brass tacks level, this is too much for some fans to pay. Especially with the option now of watching the show on Netflix.

A I have observed that there's a lot of discussion regarding anime prices recently elsewhere which seems to suggest that fans should jut shut up and pay the money. Not saying this comes from anyone selling it, but that worries some fans.

We don't care how much it costs to cover the behind the scenes costs of releasing these shows, or what it costs to put them in front of the BBFC, or put them in nice boxes. We just want to be able to afford the shows. Kill La Kill is just flat out unaffordable for some of us, and until a more cost effective edition is available, a lot of us are holding off.

Hi JoeConsumer,

Again at a brass tacks level we wholly agree - this is too much for some fans to pay and it's a segment of the market we not only recognise but seek to engage with as quickly as we can. Space Dandy is a key case where the wait from Collector's Edition (£59.99 for S1, with rigid packaging and 200 page artbook on BD) is a mere 1 month away max from the standard BD set for £39.99 SRP.

Sometimes the licensor sets the period after and it's one we just have to work within. We're actually not allowed right now to release 12 episode sets anytime soon so we're currently faced with:

1. Wait until ?????? to do 2 half season sets or worse ?????? x 2 for a full set (probably 2016-2017)

OR

2. Release 3 sets again like the Collector's sets, but for £24.99/£29.99 for BD and £19.99 for DVD per set == £74.97/£89.97 for BD at SRP (likely less with discount) & £59.97 for DVD at SRP.

Is it better than the Collector's Price for the discounted market? Undoubtedly. Is it enough? Very likely not. We'll float the idea with fans when we have a clear release schedule in mind though and canvas fans for their opinion though as again we do recognise it.

TL;DR - We recognise & appreciate the situation and are doing or best to find a balance wherever possible :).

Best,

Andrew,
Anime Ltd
