This review is from: Who Do You Think You Are? You're My Henry Allbones (Kindle Edition)
I should warn you there are some slight plot spoilers here - but none as bad as the blurb!
Oh dear! I was looking forward to this but was really disappointed. There were just so many things that I didn't like/didn't understand. Firstly, I found the characters completely unlikeable and irritating (I know some of them were meant to be) - they all seem so shallow, flippant, mysogenistic and thoroughly unpleasant - even minor characters like the restaurant workers. Why did any of the women put up with any of the men? Lucy was 30, been married for only 8 years and ran her own shop - if she had been living on Michael's income, I could've understand her staying with him (though not supporting it) but she came across as an independent woman - why on earth did she stay with him? And even if she did, why did she put up with Michael having an illegitimate child with one of her best friends but flip at him kissing the wife of one of his friends - especially as he knew he was having affairs left right and centre? Why on earth was Michael portrayed as playboy type yet ran a shop - it was only afterwards I thought this was a bit out of character, surely he should have been doing something rather more flash? And would running a shop in a small town have funded such a lifestyle (they never seemed very busy)?
Secondly, there seemed to be so many things happening and characters appearing which in the end didn't have any relation to the plot. And so many things I didn't follow. For instance, I may have missed something but why did Justin wreck the cafe and what did he have against Michael to want to kill him (was it just revenge for the way he treated Lucy? Really?)? Who did beat up Sophia? I know her husband was following her but were we ever told that he had her beaten up? Maybe we were and I'd just lost interest by that point
And the whole thing with Henry Allbones felt incredibly contrived. What was the point of three people called the same thing as a distant ancestor - it all felt irritating to me.
And why on earth did the "blurb" tell you what was going to happen THREE QUARTERS of the way in?! I hate it when blurbs tell you something but this is the worst instance I have ever come across!
I have given it two stars rather than just one as I did finish it - though I raced through it knowing I just wanted it to end! and the genealogy strand was quite engaging.
ps I was confused by the term "busgirl" - I'd never come across this before.
