More of a novel than a study in social sciences,

Too bad Simon Schama (has his surname Frisian origins?) has not been able to stir more profound waters. Instead he only scratches the surface of dutch character during the golden age and revels in 'shrewd observations' and psychological explanations that don't convince. The book holds the middle between a historical novel and a tourist guide...
