Great book, shame about the formatting,
This review is from: The Voyage of the Beagle (Kindle Edition)
This is the first book that I've read end to end on the Kindle, and some of the formatting leaves a bit to be desired. Stray page numbers and chapter headings wandering through the text are particularly annoying.
But Darwin's sharp intelligence and surprisingly charming personality shine through all this. I didn't have any special expectations about this book even though I knew it was a classic. I was surprised at how broad Darwin's interests were (he's great on geology, which I hadn't really expected). His observations, and the pleasure he takes in them, are almost like poetry. His social observations, particularly about slavery and what we would now call racism, are more liberal and civilized than I would have expected - no social Darwinism here. I can't help thinking that he would have been a great bloke to go on holiday with, or to travel with around the world on a sailing ship.
