This review is from: Dexter: Complete Season 1 [DVD] (DVD)
For me personally `Dexter' was one of those slow burner series that gathers pace. Initially I was pretty ambivalent about it and wasn't too fussed when I watched the next episode, but by the fifth episode I was hooked and I watched the remainder of the series in quick succession. Following a blood spatter forensic analyst (Dexter) who investigate murders by day and carries them out by night, the concept it both original and chilling. Dexter is careful to choose his victims very carefully and only murders those most `deserving' because they have gotten away with heinous crimes of their own. This creates the dichotomy of the series where you are left rooting for the `bad' guy. Michael C Hall is as amazing as ever and his detached portrayal of Dexter's emotions makes you appreciate the latent psychotic aspect of his character that is revealed (and nurtured by his foster father) throughout the series. The series has a common storyline throughout, hunting the ice truck killer, as well as individual stories for each episode where Dexter kills his own victims. Overall the acting is excellent from all involved, apart from the actor who plays Dokes who comes across as overly gung ho and the archetype `macho' cop and the actress who plays Deb, Dexter's sister, who is wooden and has terrible dialogue delivery. The finale is brilliant and had me on the edge of my seat throughout and it had some great twists that were excellent pay off for watching the complete series (no cop outs here!). If you don't mind some violence and loads of blood, but want some excellent acting and plotlines then this is the series for you and I can't wait to buy the second!
