Expressive performances of Haydn 'Sturm und Drang' Symphonies,
This review is from: Haydn : Symphonies Nos 44, 45 & 49 - Apex (Audio CD)
It is no bad thing to have contrasting opinions of musical performance! These three middle-period (emphatically not early) symphonies are amongst the greatest Haydn wrote. Now that the Pinnock recordings are no longer available, these Koopman ones are particularly welcome.
The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra is one of the three or four finest in the world, and its players can certainly afford the best instruments! As a conductor, composer, instrumentalist and teacher myself, I usually have an ear for intonation; perhaps Mr. Kerrigan is confusing Haydn's high level of dissonance (for example in the Adagio of No.44) with poor intonation. As for the strings, they sound to me particularly sweet and silvery in their high registers.
The performances are more expressive, both in detailed nuances and in large-scale dynamics, than many 'historically informed' readings, but this suits the emotional power of these works eminently well. I thoroughly recommend this disk.
