what Now is a good album of quality Rock songs from a quality rock band. The production is crisp and clear and there is space for everything. which is good. The guitar playing is typical purple the whole album is typically purple infact, nothing much has changed in that respect. Ian Gillans vocals are still pretty good despite his age and the drums still kick hard too. Roger Rumbles nicely in the background.
my favourite songs on this album are Simple song and uncommon man with its really eleaborate structure building up in to a fanfare and having a few interesting chord choices it is on the edgey side. The riff on that song is copied by the keyboard too. Simple song is an interesting way to start of an album as it isn't exactly a fast or edgy or energetic song it is quite slow infact.
while this is no machinehead any one who still expects anything like that from deep purple is an idiot those days are almost 50 years ago now, and if they were still doing things like that they would have gone the way of the dino's long ago. Deep purple have evolved in to a solid rock band with just a touch of inventiveness coming around the bend now and again. the one thing that they could have done with changing on this album is perhaps been a little bit more energetic, there is an overall lazy feel to the whole album despite the songs like Uncommon Man.
All in all a fairly solid release from the Purps
