Much better than you have been led to believe,
This review is from: Wilderness (Audio CD)
This album really seems to divide opinion. Even though i was a big suede fan back in the day, i had paid pretty much zero attention to brett's solo career as i tend to have slight committment issues when it comes to music. Having seen suede at 02 recently i was so blown away that i decided to investigate. The first album has a couple of good tracks on it but some of it is pretty poor in my opinion. However it inexplicably was more favourably reviewed than wilderness, which was pretty much ripped apart. In fact the reviews were so bad that i decided not to bother with it. I then watched a few live performances on you tube and really liked them. When i listen to wilderness i wonder if i am listening to the same album as the one which was so reviled. It's not perfect but brett's voice sounds great, and there are a couple of brilliant songs - blessed and funeral mantra are my particular favourites. I also love back to you but not the version on here unfortunately - emmanuelle seigner ruins it for me. I can see what he was going for but it doesn't work. Do yourself a favour and download the version from Pleasure 2 instead.
I have a feeling that the criticism of this album was as much about brett as about the album itself. Some people just don't like him, others used to and can't seem to accept that he is getting older and isn't going to be making glam/trash pop songs any more. At times he can seem a bit po-faced and humourless so i can understand why wilderness may not be to everyone's taste. However if you are looking for a melancholy album with a great voice at its centre then you will enjoy this.
