This review is from: Songs of Kabir (New York Review Books Classics) (Paperback)
Mehrotra makes Kabir appear a crack-pot- like some one who says 'You don't need to study to be a Doctor. Just change your name to Doctor by deed poll. I did it myself. I can now cure Death which not even these so called educated Doctors can do. Look at what's happening in America. All this fuss about Obamacare. If everybody just changes their name to Doctor, they will all be able to heal themselves! Think of the money they will save!'
Where Mehrotra goes wrong is in thinking that words like 'Rama' or 'Pundit' or 'Shaivite' have the same valency and associations in English as they do in Hindi. Also he's just ignorant. I've a fuller review here[...] though I warn you it is rather strongly worded.
Still, Mehrotra deserves nothing better.
