This review is from: Servants: A Downstairs View of Twentieth-century Britain (Hardcover)
This is a fascinating book about the life of servants in 20th century Britain (mostly in England, really). It covers both the lives of servants in large aristocratic houses and those in smaller middle class homes. There are lots of quotations from letters, diaries and memoirs, and the author has also interviewed some former servants. The way in which service changed and the political and social developments that led to service becoming an increasingly unpopular job are well covered. A really good read and highly recommended.
