Cruise'in for a bruisin,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Jack Reacher [DVD] (DVD)
Despite never winning an Academy award, it's safe to say he is one of the most watchable Oscar nominees never to win a gong. Like him or not, he makes great movies. I cant remember the last turkey he made, even the poor ones (Days of Thunder for one) were stupidly entertaining. After all of these years, he still is the most bankable star in Hollywood so why was it so hard for some to believe that Cruise could play Lee Child's antihero?
However, importantly is the movie any good? .. in my opinion YES it is.
Cruise plays Jack Reacher, an ex military service man, now drifter, aloof, who comes out of hiding to investigate some, which at first looks like a series of random killings of innocent members of the public. After the event, the accused killer, hospitalised and while questioned by the authorities holds up a sign which simply says 'Get Jack Reacher'. Before he could be found, Reacher turns up at a Police station and sets out to dig a little deeper in to the mystery having some previous knowledge of the accused sniper. The story then starts to unravel with entertaining intrigue. For as long as I can remember and as good as he is in this, the movie isn't the Tom Cruise show. The strength of the movie is in the writing, also the direction was very well handled by Christopher McQuarrie.
Having never read any books from the series I guess I have an advantage over all the Reacher fans who were shocked at Cruise's interest in the character a couple of years ago. The whiney a*sed "well he isn't big enough or tall enough!!" comments I've read were all laughable. Just silly. He more than holds his own.
The movie has a superb script, it's well acted (despite the occasional cheesy delivery) and above all, it's brilliantly entertaining, great fun. So much in fact that I may now go read the books. Even if the geeky fans of the book series can't get over Cruise's physical stature and blindly discard him, they must surly admit it was a well made movie.
If you want a gritty, hard action mystery with a touch of humour and great quotable dialogue, you can go far worst than Tom Cruise's 'Jack Reacher'.

I agree with your assessment of the film. It stands up as a well put together action/thriller and is an enjoyable evenings viewing.
However, I do have more sympathy than you for the fans of the books. Once you have become involved in a character in a book you tend to form a mental image of him. In this case, Reacher in the books is a physically very imposing character and the books play on that. Sensibly the film ignores this aspect of the character - Cruise is many things but he is never going to intimidate anyone by looking down at them. So I would say if you can come to this with an open mind then you will probably enjoy it but if you have a strong mental image of Reacher based on the books you will probably find the film irritating or even unwatchable.
