High Ground is author Jack Turner's debut novel, but it read like the work of an experienced and well rounded author. This is a hard science fiction story that owes it's origins to the cyberpunk genre in some ways, and also Iain Banks or Neal Stephenson style of realistic and believable space opera.
It's tight and fast paced, with great characterisation and some very cool set pieces (trying to avoid spoilers here). The author creates a strong sense that there's a wider world outside the environs of the story, as all good SF should do. I also loved the juxtaposition of low and high tech (for example, in the battle scene at the beginning) and how both sides deal with that.
I'd highly recommend this to anyone who's a fan of Neal Stephenson or similar and is looking for a great, smartly put together, action-filled read.
