The enthusiasm of the other reviews have pretty much covered this album.Suprisingly not one negative comment which tempts me to try and think of one! I enjoyed her live performance of Jools Holland (UK) the other night even if it was a little contrived with the James Brown coat cover up re-anactment. There; negativity over! I must mention Ms. Monae looked more beautiful in the flesh on a TV screen than she does on the album cover but this is a music review not a fanzine!
A solid album which others have said is hard to pigeon-hole and why the hell should we.The term 'modern concept album' was something I thought died with vinyl but here we have a fine 21st. century example to listen to which should deny people the right to skip tracks or only download part of the story. The rocky guitar led tracks do have a bit of Prince feel but some of the pseudo-classical moments with strings and choral arrangements are uniquely beautiful. There is a certain retro-swing type feel to these moments which kind of gives the music a film soundtrack feel even though the film of the story has not been made yet. This is where I can foresee the internet developing the whole concept here into a Blade Runner type story providing the music buyer supports the idea.
I applaude the thought that has gone into this project and I really recommend you give it a listen and respect what the artist is trying to do.Not a comparison but this album sits well alongside the Gorillaz Plastic Beach set-both are trying to do something fresh, imaginative and new.
