While not perfect, this is indicative of the debut thrash presses at the time. Like Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer, their unwitting musical bedfellows, Anthrax have not so much crafted but discharged this landmark springboard of raucous, rowdy and energetic thrash as a veritable fist to the listener's ears. Impressive stuff but, without a distinct sound yet, not flawless.
The Electronic feedback that gives way to 'Deathrider' is quite a shock, as is the furied riff that follows. An excellent start that is followed by an equally excellent 'Metal Thrashing Mad'. Both classics yet barely what could be called thrash, possibly very fast heavy rock. The cover of Alice Cooper's 'I'm Eighteen' is actually one of the best covers of anything ever. It's after the first 3 tracks where the quality dips slightly. There's no real dud songs but there aren't many stand outs either. However, they are made up of decent enough mid-tempo rousing, thumping anthems of metal. But not thrash. That would come on album number 2 - and what an album!
Fistful of Metal - a good start with a couple of classic songs. Better was on its way...
