What a remarkable journey! I am awed by the decision to take such a trip, and amazed that it was possible to do so without major mishap. I saw some negative reviews, pointing out that the writing and editing leaves something to be desired in places, which is the only reason why I didn't give this five stars. Having said that, the small errors in grammar and the simple style actually humanised the story.
I would love for my kids to be taught by Dan Bent - what an inspirational teacher he must be. I have heard it said "those that can, do, while those that can't, teach". Dan proves that there are those that teach who can teach... and can do. And teach not only the kids whom he taught in school, but the people he met on his epic (yes, 15,000 kms on a bicycle qualifies as 'epic' in my book) journey, and those of us who read his story with an open heart. I do hope that he returns to teaching - our children need role models like this who are not afraid to live their dreams.
Well worth reading this book, if only to recognise how fortunate we in the west truly are, and yet how utterly indomitable the human spirit is in the hardest circumstances.
