Pleasurable reading even if you're an Allotment Phobic,
This review is from: Minding My Peas and Cucumbers: Quirky Tales of Allotment Life (Hardcover)
The reason I picked up Minding my Peas & Cucumbers is that I'm a fan of Kay Sexton's short stories (published in various anthologies & magazines.). I have no interests in allotments or growing anything on my own, but I still got a lot of pleasure from reading this book.
I found myself skimming through the practical tips (on everything from container planting to how to survive an inspection) and recipes (I lusted after blueberry tarts though ...) to get on with "the story". Well there's not a story as in a novel, but some characters appear in several of the anecdotes Sexton's tells ... Most memorable is fellow allotment holder HSM (HomeSchoolingMother) and I was laughing out loud at the description of her neglected children, but this story has a darker side to it too ... There are other highlights as well - you don't want to know the secret behind growing the biggest water melons for example.
I never knew there were so many rules and so much competition in the allotment world ... Now that I know I'm even less interested in getting an allotment, but I'm tempted to hang out at an allotment site just to get inspiration and meet some odd characters ....
So I'd say if you already have an allotment this book is a must. If you don't have an allotment and are thinking of getting one, this book will give you a better idea (or scare you off as it's hard work!), and if you're like me - an allotment phobic - this books is worth dipping into just for the stories.
