This review is from: Black Athena: the Afroasiatic Roots of Classical Civilization, Volume 2: 002 (Black Athena: The Afroaslatic Roots of Classical Civilizatio) (Paperback)
I read this book when it first came out. Since then it has received both critical acclaim and plenty of brick-bats from Classicists who cannot stomach Bernal's revolutionary claims for the Afro-Asiatic origins of Western Civilization. I for one was captivated by this complex, hugely erudite thesis. Since I live in Venice, surrounded by Renaissance art, I take pleasure in reminding my Greek and Italian friends that they owe as much to the Phoenicians as they do to ancient Greece or Rome. You may not know much about Asiatic languages (I surely do not) but this is still and fascinating read and intellectually challenging - if you are up for it!
