5.0 out of 5 stars For those who haven't read the books :-), 14 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I am an avid reader so understand how disappointing it can be when they make one of your favourites into a film and ruin it but I haven't read this series, at least not yet anyway so I will review the film on it's own merit.
Firstly I would say it's essential to have seen the first film before you watch this one, you need to have the back story to understand the characters and how they came to be friends or enemies with certain people, the first film also explains who Percy is and how he came to camp half blood.
If you have seen the lightning thief and enjoyed it then you will love this second instalment which is even better in my opinion. I feel Sea of Monsters is just so much more pulled together with much better character development and pacing and the effects are amazing, particularly in 3D.
I really like the new characters introduced in this film and felt the amount of people we get to see more of means you get a much better feeling of what camp half-blood is like and what Percy's life is like there. The story is easy to follow and though it's a little predictable in parts there are plenty of twists and surprises, I just hope that a third film is in the works as we do get hints of what else is to come and I can't wait!

So glad I saw this review, as I had been told this second film was rubbish and that none of the original key characters were reappearing, so this is clearly untrue (having seen the cover, all three main characters are the same). So glad you enjoyed it. I've read all the books and they are brilliant, so I'm sure you won't be disappointed when you come to reading them either (was lucky enough to get the first six on a DS Flips game cartridge, effectively turning my ds into an e-reader!!).

I've heard the 2nd film is truer to the books than the first. Now I've read all the Percy Jackson books I'll be in a better position to judge. The first film was good on its own merits, but was nothing like the book, and, as the first film accused Lord Hades of being behind the theft of the lightning bolt, I'm curious as to how they will correct this error and serious character slight as the film series continues.
