This review is from: The Last Supper: A Summer in Italy (Hardcover)
Rachel Cusk's memoir of a three-month sojourn in Italy with her family both belongs in the "Toujours Provence" sub-genre and transcends it. Her thoughtful and beautifully crafted musings on the nature of England, the need to both escape from and to return there, the thrill of road, the lure of the Med., on art, food, religion and the emotions of foreigness all take us to a place of literature beyond the banalities of the anecdotal.
Many will buy this book looking for a summery escape into olive groves and steep Tuscan villages; they will not be disappointed. Along the way, however, the casual reader will find a poetic and heartfelt dissertation on the nature of travel itself.
