Fun while it lasts (single player review),
This review is from: Syndicate (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
While this may not be the Syndicate of old, an instant Bullfrog classic may I add; it is an enjoyable FPS with some brutal and engaging set pieces of combat and minor strategy.
Set in the year 2069 you take the role of Miles Kilo, a DART chip enhanced agent of Eurocorp. Now to keep things simple Syndicates literally rule the world...mass corporations of power and inovation, wealth and technology. In this grim future of technology the corporations are constantly at one anothers throats, all trying to gain the upper hand over one another.
I have completed the single player campaign, despite only getting the game yesterday. It took me seven hours to complete and I really did enjoy it. This game is getting mixed reviews but the combat is really good with precise aiming and a nifty cover system. The game is linear unfortunately but it does its job. A lot of gamers nowadays are happy with 7/8 hour campaigns for FPS shooter games, I mean look at Call of duty and Battlefield they are no different.
Anyway what makes Syndicate different from the other FPS's on the market? Well its the DART interface. As an agent of Eurocorp you can slow time, cause enemies guns to misfire, make people commit suicide and even temporarily take control of weaker enemies and get them to fight for you. I know this may sound familiar but given the fact that this game can get extremely difficult in places with mass shootouts, the powers at your disposal can instantly change the tide of combat. Plus there is an excellent one hit take down move, complete with a satisfying animation to instantly dispatch closer enemies.
The weapons are pleasing to the eye, they handle well and are fairly varied. Take the standard assualt rifle...you can use a red dot sight or instantly change to an ACOG variant. All weapons usually have two fire modes, or alternative aim options which is sweet.
As you progress through the game and obtain more CHIP technology, usually salvaged from Boss battles and key NPC's, you can upgrade your abilities and their is a skill tree if you like. Quicker health regeneration, more slow-down time and higher damage resistance. All in all the skills are not ground breaking but they at least add another layer of depth to the whole affair.
The game flows along at a fast pace and offers minimum cut scenes and decent voice acting. The only downside to all of this is that I really wanted to explore more of the world and see more of it. Maybe a future sequel will rise?
This game for a Single player experience is very short and I wanted more of that experience. I know the game is online co-op but I do enjoy playing alone, as do a lot of gamers. For me this is a great shooter to kick off the trend in 2012. As for replay value you are scored on your performance on each stage so if you want to aim for maximum points then you can go back and do that. As the game features many set pieces you may also try a bit more strategy and try getting through a level without dying, believe me it can get tough and some of the boss battles....well lets just say they can get a tad annoying until you know what you are doing.
Final thought - solid shooter with some nifty abiliies and a great setting,
7.5 / 10
