Special fried Rice or Hong Kong Duck ?,

This is either a spicy flawed classic or an over boiled turkey. True it does have some great set pieces. The tasty shoot-out in the shanghai restaurant and the final bridge shoot-out scene is especially good well lit and designed. But between these tasty appetizers are some bloated main courses.
If any film illustrates why not to cast models in lead roles it's this one. Yes they look good but too much leaves you unsatisfied. Such is the case with the model playing investigative reporter Tracey Lo. She looks good but she can't act for air. Still she does get naked a few times so it all balances out in the end.
Despite this Rourke is at his fist thumping, table banging anti establishment, it's me against the world best. Even though he does play a Polish racist cop whose character is thouroughly unlike able throughout the film he does it very well. He's almost a natural. And in these P.C times it's good to see a character so rotten. It's just a shame that he's the protaganist. It really doesn't give us anyone to lay our sympathies with except the bad guys. Those Triads seem like nice old business guys compared with the lunatic that is Captain Stanley white. And John Lone is excellent. Kind of like an Asian Dirk Bogarde. Camp and ruthless.
With a script by Oliver Stone and directed by Michael Cimmino and produced by Dino De Laurentis in 1985 I guess it couldn't be anything but overblown.
