This review is from: Rossini: Petite Messe Solennelle [DVD] (DVD)
I have a CD of the original setting of this for a very small choir accompanied by two pianos and harmonium which I love. I have a large home cinema with full surround sound and this 5.1 full orchestral version with large choir, excellent soloists and a huge organ is simply wonderful. The soprano & contralto duet 'Qui tollis' accompanied by two harps brings tears to the eyes while Riccardo Chailly's expressions of encouragement to the choir are amazing. My only criticism is that the chorus 'Cum Sancto Spiritu' comes in the middle because it really knocks your socks off and would make a grand finale to an outstanding production instead of the 'Agnus Dei' which is a bit of an anti-climax, but that is how Rossini wrote it. So when ever I play this to friends I repeat the 'Cum Sancto' at the end and everyone leaves with a smile on their face.
