Best of Genre - Gentle 1960s Costume Comedy,
This review is from: Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines [DVD] (DVD)
Jam-packed with stars from the '60s, this is a great comedy movie that can be watched over and over again. Terry Thomas delivers the worst of the 'bad language' with his trademark exclamation "Blast!", and receives the worst of the 'violence' (a well earned but not very hard punch on the nose), so this really is a perfectly suitable 'U' movie for any children old enough to watch movies.
The movie does play a little on nationalistic pride, something that was possibly a little stronger when the movie was made, so we see the French competitor duelling with the German (in the silliest duel you ever saw) although of course no-one gets hurt let alone killed. Lots of nation vs nation rivalry, but all in the context of positive healthy competitive spirit.
At 132 minutes it is a longish movie, but the action and laughs keep coming fast enough to maintain interest, and the DVD even includes a delightfully quaint Intermission, which for viewers of a certain age will evoke memories of queueing for KiaOra and ChocIces from a lady with a torch and tray on a neck-strap in the cinema aisles back when it was originally released.
I bought it as a 6th birthday present for my friend's son who is currently 5, so I probably need to buy another copy or he'll be in university before I'm finished with it.
