This review is from: Amongst the Martian Ruins (Paperback)
If you're a reader like me who loves all the controversy about the Face on Mars, and you know at least a bit about all the details and theories that surround the subject since the release of the Viking photos, and you think you're going to find in this book the Cydonia sci-fi story we all hope to read one day about this subject, look somewhere else, believe me.
I tried very hard to like this book, i realy did. First of all on the positive side, it has an excelent pace and it's very well writen in a simple straightforward style that keeps things moving all the time, wich makes it a great reading choice if you want something light to read on the beach in one afternoon for example. In fact despite all my bad comments i still recomend this one, because it's one of those little novels that grows on you. Unfortunely these good points are almost ruined by a total lack of imagination when it comes to the plot.
It's a complete disapointment. Amongst the Martian ruins, has such a predictable plot that sometimes it becomes an incredibly boring shore just to keep reading. I kept on, in the hope that things would get imaginative further ahead, but unfortunely they didn't ! The story has no imagination whatsoever, and the plot looks like it was imagined by a teenager who saw to much modern american tv sci-fi series, such is the emptiness present here. It's that kind of story that i would never write if i was a writer, because frankly what would be the point ? We have seen this plot in millions of bad teenage adventure tv sci-fi shows before. Imagine a cross between Mission to Mars and Invasion of the Body Snatchers and you'll have this book. A book that not only gets disapointing in its plot but sometimes it gets really anoying because it seems the author was trying to convey some kind of "All men should be brothers" type of message and it fails miserably because it's in this part of the book that the writing feels realy childish suported by a "Martian" story so clichéd that almost made me drop this book. The book lacks atmosphere, the characters feel empty, and by the end of the story we couldn't care less about who dies or not. We just want something imaginative to appear. It NEVER does.. The suspance is non existent because we get right away what the characters are going to do ahead, and sometimes it seems like we're reading a book version of the movie "Scream" because we just feel like shouting - " i can't believe these guys are going to do that ! They did ! " You get the idea ?...
If you are up to date with all the polemic surrounding the ruins of Mars, you'll find nothing new or imaginative in this book. Think of one of those theories about Cydonia ,but imagined by a teenager filled with popular Tv sci-fi references and plastic adventure monster stories and you'll have the content of this book. Trully a disapointment. Even the cover is ugly and unimaginative (i had to say this).
Anyway if you want a light sci-fi reading to spend an afternoon, this is a great little adventure book and money well spent, because it reads like a Marvel Comics adventure if you're into it. I had fun reading it. It's like a very good horror B-movie set on Mars. But if you're expecting a good sci-fi and an imaginative martian archeological story, this is not the book you want. I cannot believe someone rated this book five stars before ! That rating totaly fooled me and made me buy it. I don't regret it because it is a cute novel , but i was hoping for a book with imagination instead and this story delievers no imagination whatsoever, this is the reason i only give it two stars. So be carefull, because this might not be the book you're expecting.
