An absolutely amazing and brilliant first album,
This review is from: Gimme Something Real (Audio CD)This was Nick and Val's first offering after they left the Motown stable as writers, producers - and for Val - performer.
The album starts with "Bend Me" which is rather a haunting but powerful track. Nick's voice is strong, and compliments Val's beautifully throughout the album, but that first track sets the scene for the remainder. 'Time' is a lovely ballad, which gives a superb opportunity for both Nick and Val to show their vocal skills. 'Have you ever tried it' is more upbeat, before the title track 'Gimme something real' emerges.
Nick and Val wrote and produced all the tracks, and I believe that all 9 tracks were originals at the time of the album coming out. All of the tracks are lyrically strong, musically superb, and Val's voice is allowed to show just how good she is, and Nick's opportunity to show - for the first time - that he has a very versatile voice, which can deal with any type of song material.
My personal favourite has to be "Anywhere", which closes the album. This is a long track, and starts quietly with both Nick and Val singing against each other .. "I'd know you... anywhere... " and the orchestra picking up in such a very soulful way.
What is also incredible, is that their professional relationship, which began in the early 1960s, is still going so very strong.
There is no doubt that this was a most brilliant first album from Nick and Val - and I can not recommend it highly enough.
