Although this book is called 'Have Your Cake and Eat It' there are a variety of sweet treats included, not just the baked kind. So alongside ginger biscuits and gluten-free chocolate whoopies sit lemon and lavender frozen yoghurt and homemade rocket lollies. (There are also a number of recipes for bread and rolls, so the book goes slightly beyond your basic sugar fix). Some of the dishes look quite dry and unappealing - for example, the bread and butter pudding, though I can't really work out why, as it uses nearly a litre of milk, and it's the perfectly palatable semi-skimmed, rather than the somewhat watery full skim that you often see in 'healthy' recipes. Similarly the simnel tart looks as arid as the Sahara, and didn't really tickle my tastebuds. On the other hand, there are delicious recipes for caribbean bananas with cardomom and ginger, and balsamic strawberries, both of which I tried and loved. I do question whether overall I might prefer to see recipes that use small amounts of high fat (but natural) products like butter and cream, rather than low fat but processed/artificial products like low fat spreads. I am pleased to report however, that Sally uses natural sweeteners rather than artifical ones, so it's honey and small amounts of sugar, rather than Splenda or Nutrasweet. A few more pictures would have been nice (there isn't one for every recipe), but overall it's not a bad book, especially for someone with serious health issues. 3.5 stars.
